Phillip Island

by Phillip Whelan

Phillip Island Victoria - is just that, a 4.45km circuit set on an island 128 kms east of Melbourne. The track is one of the oldest and certainly has the best out look in the business. It is also the fastest in the championship. Being the fastest can mean things go wrong in a big way.

As the track is set on an Island the weather can prove unpredictable making racing, and even testing very dangerous.

Many accidents over the past few years have shown the need for a "Safety-enhancing overhaul." Run-off areas are the main areas redeveloped. Extensions of gravel traps at turns two, three, eight and twelve have been carried out.

Turn three has lost the tyre wall and extensive earth works has provided an extra 60 metres run off area.

Turn eight's barrier has been moved back over 24 metres; while the run off area at turn nine has been extended.

The final turn has received an entry kerb prior to the corner.
