Mount Panorama

by Phillip Whelan

Mount Panorama is a legend in its own right, and has become the Mecca of motor sport in Australia.

The Bathurst annual 1000 Km is perhaps the toughest race of all for the V8 Supercars. A win here brings instant fame to the winning drivers, team and sponsors. The origins of this event can be traced back to Phillip Island in 1960 with the inception of the Armstrong 500 (run over 500 miles). By 1962 the Phillip Island track surface was badly worn, and the decision was made to move the Armstrong 500 to Bathurst. Many sponsor changes a switch to metric, have given this event many name changes over the years.

The Track:

Each corner of Mount Panorama has a unique character with different cambers being experienced by the drivers. Lots of undulations, uphill and downhill turns. Fast straights such as Mountain and Conrod allowing speeds of almost 300 KPH. Pit stops for tyre, driver changes and refuelling are a vital part of this race. As has been said before, to finish first, first you must finish.

Reliability is every thing. If you can't be there, stay at home and watch Channel Ten's great coverage.
