How do I become a V8 Supercar driver? by Phillip Whelan |

Answer: The first thing to remember is that no team is going to just let you go for it! These days a V8 supercar can cost anything from $180000 to in excess of $300000 and damage is costly to repair.
Most of today's successful V8 race drivers started out in Go-Karts. Early race craft learned here will stand the up and coming driver in good stead for a future move to Formula Ford. Fast, competitive and great fun, this category will only further a driver's career. Marcos Ambrose, for example, moved to Formula Ford competition in Europe before joining Stone Bros. Racing. Other drivers have had racing experience in Super Tourers, Formula Holden and Commodore Cup prior to racing V8 Supercars.
Getting started: Join a Go-Kart club at a track near your home, maybe canvas some local businesses for sponsorship - motorsport is expensive! Advice from club officials and members will also be of help regarding licence requirements and safety issues.
