HQ Holden Racing.

by Phillip Whelan

HQ Racing started in Tasmania during the 1980s as a reasonably cheap way to go racing.

Having gained in popularity over the years it has also proved to be a spring board for drivers to "bigger things".

The cars as raced, are fitted with a roll cage for safety, but otherwise are pretty much standard.

The original 6 cylinder 202, 3.3 litre "red" motor with some modifications remains in place. As does the standard 3 speed manual transmission.

Because the cars are much the same close racing is assured.

Some HQ Facts

- Price when new in 1971 for base Belmont $2,730.00 including Sales Tax.

- Total built 485,650 - the most of any model to 1998.

- The HQ was the first of the so called 100%'ers, being all Australian in design and manufacture. (100% almost! The Belmont was officially listed at 99.4% local content. The .6%? a few electrical switches and the door locks!).
