Tony Longhurst

by Press Release

One of the most experienced drivers in Australian motor sport, Tony Longhurst can claim two Bathurst victories, including victory at Mount Panorama in 2001.

His touring car career was kick-started in 1985 when he joined the Frank Gardner-run JPS BMW team alongside Australian Touring Car Champion Jim Richards in a 635Csi for the endurance events of that year; the highlight being victory in Sandown 500.

From 1986 Longhurst has been a full-time driver in touring cars with BMW, Ford and Holden teams. His partnership with Gardner brought success at Bathurst when he took the 1000 kilometre classic in 1988.

Longhurst was a master of the AMSCAR Series at Amaroo Park in Sydney winning it five times between 1986 and 1991. He also drove on numerous occasions for BMW teams, with the highlight being named BMW International driver of the year in 1993.

Other notable performances included victory in the 1992 Wellington 500 in New Zealand, Australian Super Tourer Champion in 1994 and top-five finishes at Mount Panorama between 1994 and 1997.

Lognhurst ran his own Falcon team from 1994 through to 1999, before taking the seat aboard the Caltex Havoline Falcon of Stone Brothers Racing in 2000. That year he led Bathurst in the final stages when a collision with a back-marker ended any hopes of victory.

Ran with Rod Nash Racing in 2001, showing his class in the under-financed team. His performance with the Holden Race Team at Queensland and Bathurst earned the respect V8 fraternity and in particular John Briggs who offered him a place in the all-new Betta Electrical Racing team for 2002.
