After being voted "Junior Driver of the Year" in 1988 & 1989 and his fourth Gold Coast Kart Prix victory in as many years, his interest turned to cars.
In 1992 Steven won the first of two "Evan Thomas Memorial Trophy". He then ventured south to Amaroo Park for a race victory the following year, repeated his under 3 Sports Sedan class win at Lakeside in 1992/93 and currently holds the record at this track for the fastest lap ever there in a rotary powered car.
His first move to the big time came in 1994 when Steven and father Dick won a class victory in a Ford Falcon XR6 in the James Hardie 12 Hour production car race at Bathurst.
During 1994 Steven began a testing program and later joined forces in a Shell FAI Racing Falcon V8 with Alan Grice in the Sandown and Bathurst events.
1997 saw Steven's first V8 Supercar win at Phillip Island in a Privateer Dash driving the Alcair Holden Commodore. Steven then teamed up with Craig Baird in the #18 Shell Helix Falcon for the Tickford 500 finishing seventh in atrocious weather conditions.
Steven competed in selected rounds in the 1998 Shell Australian Touring Car Championship in the "Racing for Life" Ford Falcon.
Steven and his father competed in both the 1998 Tickford 500 and FAI 1000 Classic. Despite being amongst the leaders in both races out of control back markers damaged the #17 forcing it to be withdrawn from both events.
Bathurst 1999 father and son again teamed up and finished a creditable 4th place.
On the retirement of his famous father (Dick Johnson) In 2000 Steven gained a full time drive with the Shell Helix racing team.
The 2000 FAI 1000 proved what a great driver Steven Johnson is, he again finished 4th with Cameron McLean in the #17 AU Falcon.
