Steve Ellery began racing karts in 1987 at the age of 13 and moved in Formula Ford four years later.
Ellery then moved into touring cars and had a class win at the 1993 Sandown 500, while in 1994 and 1995 he competed in the two-litre category. That netted him fourth outright in 1994 and runner-up in the Privateers Cup the following year.
In 1996 he ran a privateer Falcon in the championship and joined forces at the end of the year with Tony Longhurst to take third place at Bathurst.
In 1998 Ellery drove the Konica Young Lions Commodore in the championship and in 1999 competed in selected rounds in the former Mark Larkham Falcon. That year he also took pole at the Indy races and then teamed up with Paul Radisich in the Shell team for the enduros.
In 2000 he proved it again, taking first in Race Two at Sandown and second in Race Three. The result gave him second place for the round.
